You must connect to the router via your browser. You should have the product’s user manual in-hand when you do. Typically, the address for the router is 192.168.1.1, but that’s subject to the manufacturer’s whim.
OK, so you connect to the router. It has some predefined pages that allow you configure all sorts of stuff – including that you can put a password on the network such that you have to know the password to complete the connection. There is the main page where you choose which of several possible channels to broadcast. But there is another page that you can use to enter a network password. What happens after that is that the computer and the router, both having the same password, generate an encryption key based on that password. They encrypt all traffic. And that keeps your network secure. Keeps folks from riding your net.
